Now is a great time to learn from your plants!

Your plants explore the soil with their roots, their leaves and growth can indicate problems;

  • fanged roots or roots that travel horizontally suggest lots of stones or compaction at rooting level
  • strange leaf symptoms (yellowing/ bleaching/ browning/ purpling) suggest stress from water logging or nutrient deficiency
  • stunted growth can be caused by nutrient deficiency or poor rooting
  • poor seedling emergence maybe due to overly loose or coarse seedbed
  • wilting or drought stress suggests poor root growth and maybe very tight or compacted soil

Examine the soil to find what what is going on and what soil problems you have.

Obviously with plants growing in the soil you don't want to disturb them but you will need to look after your plants;

  • for nutrient deficiencies apply a liquid/ foliar feed to soil/ plants through the growing season
  • water as needed to help weak rooted plants
  • sow in a seedbed consolidated with your hand or with the back of a rake

In the autumn loosen compacted soil with a fork and remove larger stones as needed.
