Use flat bed vegetable gardening ...

Bed vegetable gardening at it's simplest;

  • cost effective
  • time efficient
  • easy - no need to construct edging and no need to add soil to raise levels as is necessary for raised beds
  • no need to regularly dig the soil unlike with traditional veg. growing

However, it is important that your soil is in good shape , well structured with no compaction and good drainage.

The technique suits sand and loam based soils, and well drained clays over chalk or limestone.

However, if your soil has poor drainage, or is thin, then use raised beds.

Mark out the plot and establish your paths.

Throughly check the soil is in good condition and prepare the soil in each plot.

At the start, dig over and add some well rotted compost.

Then decide on your bed layout and plan your crop rotation and your planting system and planting times.

Now the fun starts as you implement those plans and sow seeds, plant seedlings and young plants as the soil warms and you discover how easy it is to use the bed system;

  • easy access
  • good for planning your crop rotation
  • great organisation
  • less work
  • get to tend your plants what-ever the weather
  • but of course you can easily reach those fresh yummy veg. when ever you want something to eat
Enjoy!
