Build a compost pile that makes great compost ...

walled compost pile

You can build a compost pile/ heap in a corner against walls, in a hole, or out in the open.

This is problably the cheapest way of making compost, but not necessarily the easiest!

So why isn't this the easiest way?

Well, it all comes down to the essentials of how to make compost.

A compost pile is not normally enclosed, and probably not be covered, so it can dry out and gets too wet as the weather changes and tends to get forgotten as piles are ... the result is slow composting and little compost.

The secret is 'the know how' that includes;

  • what materials make good compost
  • the right mix
  • aeration
  • retaining moisture
  • regular turning
  • composting organisms
  • ideally partial enclosure or some sort of compost bin.

Commercial composting organisations make compost in huge quantities in a compost heap/ pile on a flat concrete pad using the know-how above with lots of tending, heat and rapid composting over a period of weeks.

The trouble is most of us haven't the time or inclination!!
