Vegetable garden paths allow easy access what ever the weather

There are various options for vegetable garden paths to suit your budget and ease of construction. As paths are so important to allow easy access aim for a minimum width of 0.5m (20"), preferably 1m (40") to allow kneeling and turning space.

So what are the options? (I hear you ask). Well;

  • Whilst the cheapest is an earth path it is messy in wet weather and grows weeds!
  • Grass paths look nice but need mowing and grass can ingress onto the veg plot
  • Brick paths have a place in a cottage garden at home but are a big investment and otherwise don't suit
  • It's best to use a flexible alternative that is available locally

  • My preference is an easy solution with a 10 year life - a layer of weed membrane to stop weed growth covered in a cheap local material

So how do I build the path? Well - it depends on your soil and drainage;
  • On free draining soil place the weed membrane on the path in the design of your choice and cover with one of the following dressings: stone, gravel, chippings or bark
  • On poor draining soil - enhance drainage first by digging out 5cm (2") soil and add to your beds and place a layer of small stones down, then the membrane, then the top dressing

To maintain your path keep it clear of soil and top up chippings or bark annually.
