It is important to use a range of veg's. for a good crop rotation, to pick the best ones that suit your local climate and soil conditions as well as those you and your family enjoy and those with make up a healthy diet.

Vegetables come from different families;

  • roots: carrots, potatoes, beetroot, parsnips ...
  • brassicas: cabbage, broccoli, kale ...
  • curcurbits: courgettes, squash, melons, cucumber ...
  • legumes: peas and beans
  • alliums: onions, leeks, garlic, shallots
  • leaf vegetables: lettuce, endive, spinach, chard ...
  • stem vegetables: celery, asparagus ...
  • summer fruiting vegetables: tomatoes, peppers, aubergines ...

Each type has their own requirements, their own preferences and specific nutritional and health benefits.

Crop rotation is important to plant health, minimising disease and pest problems, aiding plant nutrition and maximising productivity.

Local conditions

Some crops are more frost sensitive so have to be planted later and prefer warmer sites (like tomatoes, aubergines and peppers) which are good for ripening.

Some warm sandier sites favour early growth, but drought out so you need to pick early quicker maturing types and varieties of veg. be they carrots, shallots, peas ...

Clay soils maybe slower to get going but have more resilience for potatoes and other later types like Brassicas that need moisture and nutrients for a long season.

Enjoy for good health

Remember your '5-a-day' and 'rainbow diet', this is easy when you grow and choose to eat a wide range of delicious fresh vegetables.

Can you resist fresh sugar snap/ mangetout peas straight off the plant? Sun-ripened tomatoes red and juicy just ready to pop in your mouth? Or perhaps a young fresh stick or runner bean is your preference. I know temptation get the better of me in my vegetable garden and as for the kids, they won't need tea after devouring the peas!
