Your vegetable garden layout should ease gardening

Your vegetable garden layout should incorporate the needs of both you and your choice of vegetables.

Choose a sunny site - vegetables, like us, like the sun!

Choose a site with good drainage, although this can be improved during soil preparation.

Layout the rows or beds north-south so plants get good exposure to the sun with minimum shade during the day.

Consider your options and plan the layout on paper first.

Traditional layout has become accepted as the norm and well run is simple and makes for a tidy plot. However, it can bring with it a lot of unnecessary digging and a decline in soil fertility and productivity over time through soil compaction and poor crop rotation.

Traditional vegetable plot

Bed system layout allows greater access and a greater range of crops in an area, simplifies crop rotation and although uses less soil area often increases production. It's also fund to experiment with shapes other than the functional rectangle!

Consider too the soil you are gardening, the rotation of crops necessary for healthy veg. and how much digging you will do or even NOT do with a no digging approach!!
