Optimum vegetable gardening
planting times

Maximise your success by adhering to vegetable gardening planting times.

The table below shows the optimal vegetable garden planting times for a range of common vegetables and provides both sowing times under cover and outside, transplanting times and the harvest time too.

Please note these are averages, check seed packets and ensure you adjust to suit your local conditions and climate. Use other established good local gardeners as a reference too - most are only to pleased to help a novice.

Meeting optimal planting times is important to maximise germination, growth and productivity. Too early and sensitive seedlings may get frosted, too late and the season may be too short to allow a harvest.

Different vegetables have different needs as regards sowing or planting and even transplanting.

Some vegetables like carrots, beetroot, lettuce, dwarf beans and broad beans can be planted over extended periods and suit sequential planting times, whilst others like sweetcorn and the curcurbits usually have quite a narrow planting time.

Timing, season and conditions (temperature, day length and moisture) are all important.

Check when and how to plant vegetables to maximise your overall success.
